Former CAIS scholar, William Bullock Jenkins has been awarded the 2018 London School of Economics Middle East Centre Master's Dissertation Prize 2018. The prize was designed to encourage and celebrate outstanding research on the Middle East and North Africa.

Dr Michael Mason, Director of the LSE Middle East Centre, stated: 'The winning dissertation by William Bullock Jenkins was an outstanding study of Russo-Persian economic relations in the nineteenth century. It provides an original scholarly analysis informed by primary and secondary sources in multiple languages.'

Will's thesis - 'Tariffs, Treaties, Trade: Integrating Tsarist Russian and Qajar Persian Markets under the Nineteenth Century Global Condition', was groundbreaking for applying the rigour of primary source interrogation in Russian and Persian from the disciplinary perspective of Economic History to Russo-Persian commerce that has hardly been looked at by past historians.

Will was a recipient of the 2016 Erasmus Scholarship, valued at around €60,000. The prestigious international scholarship gave Will one year at the University of Leipzig, Germany followed by another at the London School of Economics. Will graduated from the joint LSE-University of Leipzig masters with a 'MSc in Global Economic History (with Distinction)' from LSE and a 'European Masters in Global Studies' from the University of Leipzig. He also received the award for Best Graduate in the joint programme for 2018.

William studied Arabic and Persian as a CAIS undergraduate. He became one of the most eloquent and knowledgeable non-native speakers of Persian to graduate from CAIS. He was awarded Tillyard Prize in 2014 for his Honours degree which included a thesis on Iranian political economy and regional influence.
