Thursday 21 December 2017
CAIS Deputy Director, Professor James Piscatori, recently travelled to Saudi Arabia on a research trip. He said it was extremely fortunate to be in the country at a time of such extraordinary change and to meet with many members of the ruling family, academics and diplomats. A highlight of his trip was a visit to the King Abdulaziz Library as a guest of Professor Hassan Alsereihy, of the King Abdulaziz University in Madinah. Professor Alsereihy is involved in the work of the library which is to document and preserve the wafq heritage manuscripts and artefacts that have been endowed to the Prophet's Mosque over many centuries. Professor Piscatori said the collection is very important to the study of Islam and the preservation of works will be of great significance to future generations. While in Jeddah, Professor Piscatori attended the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for several days. He met with the Secretary-General and the heads of the Departments. They discussed the OIC's role in the international relations of Muslim nations. Finally, Professor Piscatori was welcomed at Dar Al-Hekma University by its president, Dr Suhair Alqurashi. He presented a lecture to the university's students on the topic of 'The Umma and the Nation State'.
