When I first started my undergraduate degree at ANU I found the undergraduate courses, 'Politics in Russia' and 'Politics in Central Asia' inspired me the most. Certainly, courses that make learning feel exciting are always more interesting. But the tutors and lecturers at the CAIS were impressive. They were always available if I had a problem and went to the effort to make sure their students understood the course material. The positive experience I had made me choose to continue my study of the region.

The Masters course provided many interesting subjects that expanded upon the knowledge I had already gained, and gave an in depth analysis on current issues in the complex regions of Central Asia, the Middle East and Russia. With the benefit of Dr Kirill Nourzhanov's first-hand experience and expertise I learned to analyse and understand these complex regions on many levels. As part of my Master's degree I was able to write a thesis which was entitled 'State-Building in Central Asia: Tradition, Modernity and Post-Modernity.

My continuing interest in this subject and the positive and supportive learning environment at CAIS encouraged me to pursue a PhD there. I went on to research a doctorate on 'Clan Power Structures in Central Asia'. I can honestly say that my time at CAIS was a wonderfully rewarding experience and I would recommend to anyone taking courses in international relations, law and business to consider taking one of these courses on this fascinating and fast growing region.
