The ANU Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies in conjunction with the Department of International Relations and the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, cordially invite friends, colleagues and former students of Geoffrey to attend a celebration of his life and work.
Mr Jukes, a distinguished scholar in international relations, public servant and mentor will be greatly missed by his many friends, colleagues and former students. He was well known in both academic circles and the wider world as an eminent scholar and widely published author of numerous books and other publications.
After leaving Oxford in 1953, Geoffrey Jukes spent 14 years in the UK Ministry of Defence and Foreign and Colonial Office, specialising in Russian/Soviet military history, strategy and arms control. He was a Senior Fellow in International Relations at ANU from 1967 to 1993, and an Associate of the Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies (the Middle East & Central Asia) until his death this year.
Mr Jukes wrote a series of distinguished works on Soviet and European military history including Stalingrad: The Turning Point (London: Ballantyne, 1984), The Soviet Union in Asia (University of California Press, 1974) and Hitler’s Stalingrad Decision, (University of California Press, 1985) He also co-edited with his former student and now CAIS Director, Amin Saikal, The Middle East: Prospects for Settlement and Stability? (Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies and Research School of Pacific & Asian Studies, ANU, 1995).
In addition to his scholarship, Mr Jukes made immense contributions to the academic development of many students at ANU and elsewhere. As the driving force behind the development of the Master’s of International Relations program in the Research School of Pacific & Asian Studies (RSPAS), he attracted the brightest students in Australia and the region. In addition he supervised over fifty doctoral students, bringing exceptional commitment to the task and holding students to rigorous intellectual standards. He was on the supervisory panel of many students at CAIS and an active and supportive advisor to CAIS since its foundation.
