The Political Crisis in Kyrgyzstan: Main Actors and Consequences

Dr Kirll Nourzhanov, Senior Lecturer at CAIS, will present a lecture as part of the Russian and East European Seminar Series.

On 8 April 2010, President Kurmanbek Bakiev was toppled and a new Provisional Government came to power in Kyrgyzstan. The regime change has been variously interpreted as a result of external interference or a spontaneous outbreak of popular protest caused by Bakiev’s authoritarian rule and economic mismanagement. This seminar will critically assess these explanations and comment on the role of Kyrgyzstan’s clan politics in recent events. It will also examine the activities of the Provisional Government and their implications for conflict and stability in the country and in the Central Asian region as a whole.
