Thursday 20 November 2025

Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, a distinguished alumnus of the College of Arts and International Studies (CAIS), has exemplified the capacity of CAIS graduates to transition from into high-level diplomatic service.

Completing his PhD in 2021, Dr. Alshaali’s groundbreaking thesis, “Re-Conceptualising Comparative Advantage and Food Sovereignty: An Unconventional Approach to Global Food Security,” offered fresh perspectives on the intersections of economics, policy, and sustainable food systems. His work challenged traditional notions of comparative advantage, advocating for strategies that prioritise national food sovereignty while addressing the complexities of global food security.

Since earning his doctorate, Dr. Alshaali has seamlessly transitioned from academia to diplomacy, currently serving as the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to India. In this role, he leverages his deep understanding of global policy, economics, and international relations to strengthen bilateral ties between two of Asia’s most dynamic nations. His tenure has been marked by initiatives aimed at enhancing trade, cultural exchange, and sustainable development collaborations, reflecting the practical applications of his academic insights in real-world international affairs.

Dr. Alshaali’s journey is a testament to the value of interdisciplinary scholarship and its potential to shape global policy. His unique approach to food security, emphasising both ethical responsibility and strategic innovation, has not only contributed to academic discourse but also informed policymaking at the highest levels.

CAIS celebrates Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali as a model of intellectual rigor, visionary thinking, and service-driven leadership. His achievements inspire current and future students to pursue knowledge boldly, engage critically with global challenges, and translate academic excellence into meaningful societal impact. Dr. Alshaali’s career embodies how purposeful scholarship can effect profound change on the world stage.
