Staff at the Australian National University’s Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS) unequivocally condemn the deadly terrorist attack that unfolded at Bondi Beach on the evening of 14 December 2025. We mourn the senseless loss of life. Our hearts are with the Australian Jewish community, with those who have lost family members and friends, and with the injured and traumatised, including police, first responders and bystanders.
We reject antisemitism and all forms of racism, and reaffirm our commitment to use our positions as researchers, teachers and academics to promote justice, peace and tolerance. There is no place in our society for violence including that directed at individuals or groups because of their religious beliefs or cultural backgrounds. No one should ever have reason to fear for their life or safety when attending a religious or cultural event.
We recognise that this is a difficult time for the Jewish community and we offer our friendship and solidarity. We stand with all Australians who reject efforts to sow hatred and division in our society.
