As events in Sudan continue to make headlines across the world, ANU’s Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies partnered with the Near East Policy Forum to bring together leading international experts for a special online event at ANU.

The 2hr event assessed the escalating political and humanitarian crises, scrutinised the durability of regionally and internationally brokered ceasefires and examined the role and impact of regional actors - Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, and the GCC states – in the conflict. The event also importantly highlighted Australia's engagement and the potential implications for our national interests.

Guest Speakers included:

• Dr Adil Abbas, Head of Higher Education at the Australian Industrial Systems Institute and community leader for the Sudanese Diaspora in Australia
• Hamid Khalafallah, Development practitioner, researcher and policy analyst based in Khartoum, Sudan
• Dr Khalid Medani, Professor of Political Science, Director of the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University

The event was chaired by ANU CAIS Centre Director, Prof. Karima Laachir and ANU’s Associate Prof. Anas Iqtait, who is also the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Near East Policy Forum. A new online platform providing open access to peer-reviewed articles analysing the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa. Articles published by NEPF can be accessed at nepf.org.au
