Afghanistan: Where did we go wrong?

Dr Suhrke will discuss her book on Afghanistan. An analytical narrative of the international involvement after 2001, the book addresses a series of questions concerning the dynamic of the intervention and its related peace-building mission. What explains the apparent systemic bias towards a deeper and broader international involvement over almost a decade? To what extent do tensions inherent in the project itself explain the very mixed results? What are the implications for the future?

Astri Suhrke, a political scientist, is senior researcher at the Chr. Michelsen Institute in Bergen (Norway). She was previously a professor of international relations at the American University in Washington D.C. She has written widely on process of state-building and peace-building and has research experience in Afghanistan that dates back over twenty-five years. Recent publications include The Peace In Between: Post-war Violence and Peacebuilding, co-edited with Mats Berdal (London, Routledge 2012) and When More is Less: The International Project in Afghanistan, (London, Hurst&Co & New York, Columbia University Press 2011).
