Qatar has witnessed an educational renaissance movement within the past decade with the strategic goal of comprehensively reforming the national educational system. The reform of publicly funded education in Qatar was entrusted to the Supreme Education Council formed in 2002.

Her Excellency Professor Al-Misnad is considered one of the most active members of the Supreme Educational Council. In 2003 Professor Al-Misnad was commissioned to lead a major reform project to transform the University of Qatar into a leading regional institution of higher education. In this lecture, Professor Al-Misnad will discuss the educational reforms and their results in Qatar.

Her Excellency Professor Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad, President of Qatar University, has been a leading Qatari educator for almost three decades. She has held numerous prestigious positions in teaching, administration, and research including: Qatar University’s Vice President for Research and Community Development, Head of the Department of Foundations of Education, and been a member of the University Council. Professor Al-Misnad received a BA and a Diploma in Education from Qatar University, and a PhD in Education from University of Durham, UK (1984). She was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Civil Law from Durham in 2008.

Professor Al-Misnad began researching education in the Gulf, and specifically education and women during her graduate studies at the University of Durham. Her major book, The Development of Modern Education in the Gulf States with Special Reference to Women’s Education, was published by Ithaca Press (London) in 1985. She has also published more than 50 articles in professional journals and has made presentations at leading conferences and seminars.

Professor Al-Misnad is a member of several international bodies and delegations, including the United Nations University Council, and the American University in Cairo Board of Trustees. She was also a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Asian University for Women in 2011.
