For the “Ugly Duckling”, the mere fact of being born in the nest of a duck, growing up amongst duckling-siblings and possessing impressive swimming skills is not a guarantee to be perceived as a duck. Just so, for Georgian citizens of Armenian origin, the mere fact of being born in Georgia, speaking the dominant language and knowing the culture is not a guarantee of automatic admission to the dominant group. This research presentation examines reminding practices carried out by the ‘reminder society’: members of the dominant
Georgian nation who do not allow ethnic Armenians to forget their non-Georgian origins.

Bio: Astamur Jikhashvili is a graduate of the Tbilisi State University in Georgia (MA in Nationalism and Ethnicity Studies) and the Philipps University of Marburg in Germany (MA in Peace and Conflict Studies). His main area of interest is the formation and evolution of national identities and the role of the latter in the development of intergroup conflicts. His geographical focus is the Caucasus region.
