Shereef Metwally is a research scholar at the ANU Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies. He was awarded the Australian Government Research Training Program Domestic Scholarship to undertake his PhD, alongside a Chancellor’s Letter of Commendation recognising his academic distinction. He also holds a Master of Financial Technology and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance from the University of New South Wales, as well as First-Class Honours in Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies from the ANU.
His research interests lie at the intersection of Islamic finance, governance, and financial innovation, with a focus on how advisory networks shape the strategic and ethical trajectories of financial institutions.
Alongside his doctoral research, Shereef has extensive experience across academia and industry. He continues to teach and support research in areas of social entrepreneurship and impact investment at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Professionally, he has held senior management and leadership roles spanning ethical investment, large-scale manufacturing and commercial property. His achievements include participating in the commercialisation of Shariah-compliant financial products in Australia, overseeing operations within a major manufacturing enterprise and managing a substantial commercial real estate portfolio. He has also helped structure multimillion-dollar ethical financing arrangements that balance commercial growth with compliance to Islamic principles.
