Abstract
Fiction provides a way through the ethical quagmire brought about by the necessity of providing both anonymity to research participants and an honest account of the field. Sheyda, the main protagonist in this short story, is a compilation of three Afghan women who make an appearance only in fragmentary form in my doctoral thesis. Her story, as it is told here, exposes the multiple tragedies and indignities that circumscribe Afghan life in contemporary Iran.
