Abstract - Finance-Growth Nexus by Tayyaba Jabeen Fazal
This proposal examines how financial sector development shaped economic growth in Muslim-majority economies during the global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on whether the risk-sharing and interest-free features of Islamic finance provided a more stable economic cushion during a major global crisis. Utilising the finance-growth nexus as a framework, it examines financial systems support capital allocation, resource mobilisation and economic recovery during periods of disruption. Using a nine-year dataset across ten Muslim-majority economies, it proposes time-series econometric analysis to assess the short- and long-run relationship between financial development and economic growth, with particular attention to Islamic banking, Sukuk markets and the Islamic Financial Development Index. The study aims to assess whether Islamic finance contributed to the capacity of Muslim-majority economies to withstand and recover from the economic shock of COVID-19.
Abstract - Blockchain-Based Zakat Management in Malaysia & Indonesia by Moniruzzaman
This proposal examines the feasibility of a Shari‘ah-compliant blockchain-based framework for zakat management in Malaysia and Indonesia. Zakat institutions in both countries have shown growing interest in digital technologies to improve transparency, accountability and administrative efficiency. However, existing research on blockchain and zakat remains limited, fragmented and largely descriptive. Using Malaysia and Indonesia as comparative cases, this study proposes primary quantitative and qualitative research to assess how blockchain can be adopted in zakat management while remaining consistent with Shari‘ah governance principles. The analysis will examine stakeholder perceptions, adoption barriers, governance requirements and institutional readiness across the two cases. The study aims to develop a practical framework for blockchain-based zakat management that responds to institutional and regulatory variation across both cases.
