"I enrolled in the Masters of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies because I wanted to further specialise in the history and politics of the region and was drawn to the broad and inter-disciplinary approach of the school. I also wanted a chance to study Modern Standard Arabic. I work full time and over the last few years have been based in Canberra and in various locations overseas. The staff have been very flexible and understanding and have really assisted me to fit in study around work commitments so I could continue to work through the Masters program. It is a small school with dedicated and enthusiastic staff and I have always felt very supported and encouraged.
I have particularly enjoyed the online Arabic course. The pace is good and there are many interesting and useful resources. The other students are spread out across Australia and overseas which makes for really interesting online class discussions. After studying Arabic on and off over the last few years, it was great to follow a structured program that I could do around other commitments. The teaching staff is really engaged and helpful and each lesson is varied and interesting.
I would recommend the online Arabic program to anyone interested in learning Arabic, whether you have done prior study or you are a complete newcomer."

“Starting the Online Persian has been one of the best things I could have done, at times exciting and exhilarating as well as hard work, but definitely a labour of love. I have discovered an interest in reading modern Persian literature and translating it into English while trying to maintain the beauty of its subtle humour and irony. I hope to return to Iran so I will use what I have learnt. I want to say that having Dr Behbahani has been an absolute boon, she knew how to extract the best from her students and we have had a wonderful time doing it.”
Janine - taking Persian online from Melbourne
“I wanted to learn a second language and as ten per cent of the community I live in speaks Arabic, this was the obvious choice. I live in Melbourne, however, there are no non-award Arabic language courses available through universities here. I am a consultant advising government and the public and community sectors. Having a second language gives me access to new markets. Expanding my capacity to communicate with diverse Australian and international communities is also generally a rewarding experience.
This is a fabulous course. Arabic is a challenging language for an English speaker, however, this course is the way to learn it. Both France Meyer and Leila Kouatly are very good at what they do and are available when needed. The lessons are considered and each builds on the one before. The online format works well, and on occasions where there are technical hiccups, these are sorted out promptly. I am really looking forward to second year. ”

"Introductory Persian A exceeded all my expectations, providing a foundation for building on this wonderful language with a very structured, comprehensive and challenging program. We were guided by Dr Taheri who was patient, knowledgeable and accessible, providing so much kind encouragement and inspiration to delve into Persian language and culture. I can't wait to continue next semester! Thank you!"
