CAIS provides several avenues for HDR scholars to come together and explore new ways to enhance the academic and professional experience. CAIS takes a broad view of research, and expects its scholars to involve themselves in the life of the Centre through active involvement in one or more of the following activities:
The Majlis
A regular roundtable on contemporary issues in Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and North African politics run entirely by HDR scholars. The Majlis is an opportunity for HDR students to present their own research, and to hear about the latest research from world-class scholars.

Conferences
CAIS HDR students organise a major conference every second calendar year.
In 2021, CAIS postgraduate students are particularly encouraged to participate in two major conferences:
AAIMS Conference 'The Future of Islam and Humanity: Local and Global Challenges and Opportunities' on 14-16 September
Call for papers deadline 1 June
46th Annual Conference of the Australian Association for the Study of Religion on 9-10 December
Call for papers deadline 31 October
Previous CAIS conferences:
Governance, Security, and Asymmetrical Warfare in Central Asia and the Middle East (2019)
After the rule: A symposium on alternative traditions of law, norms and rules (2018)
Postgraduate reading and writing group
CAIS HDR students run a monthly reading and writing group. The group aims at critically engaging with scholarly debates across CAIS’s broad disciplinary areas, and to constructively support each other’s thesis writing. This group is run in an informal and social style, and all HDR students are welcome.
